Cornea Transplantation

The cornea, the transparent layer at the front of the eye that focuses light, can lose its clarity due to various diseases or trauma. Cornea transplantation (Keratoplasty) is a miraculous surgical method that eliminates these conditions causing vision loss and enables our patients to see the world again in all its colors. At MN Medical International, we restore your vision with the most delicate touches.

What is Cornea Transplantation?

Cornea transplantation is the surgical removal of a damaged, blurred, or distorted corneal tissue and replacing it with transparent corneal tissue obtained from a healthy donor. As long as the other parts of the eye are healthy, this operation can restore visual acuity at a rate of over 90%.

When is Cornea Transplantation Necessary?

Cornea transplantation is generally applied as a definitive solution for the following vision problems:

  • Keratoconus: The distortion of the cornea’s shape as it thins and bulges outward, causing blurred vision.

  • Corneal Edema (Fuchs’ Dystrophy): The clouding of the tissue due to fluid accumulation as a result of the deterioration of the cornea’s inner layer.

  • Corneal Injuries: Permanent scars caused by chemical burns or physical trauma.

  • Post-Infection Scars: Scars remaining after severe eye infections such as Herpes.

Modern Approach in Surgical Techniques Full-Thickness and Partial-Thickness Transplant Methods

At our center, advanced techniques aimed at replacing only the damaged layer of the cornea are applied:

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty: The classic method where all layers of the cornea are replaced.

  • Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK / DMEK): Modern methods where only the problematic front or back layer is replaced, minimizing the risk of tissue rejection and accelerating recovery.

Sutureless and Micro-Surgical Applications

Using high-tech microscopes and precision surgical instruments:

  • We minimize post-operative stinging and burning sensations.

  • We aim for clearer vision by keeping the risk of astigmatism under control.

  • We offer our patients a comfortable surgical process with local or general anesthesia options.

Post-Operative Recovery Process

After a cornea transplant, our patients can usually be discharged on the same day:

  • Rapid Adaptation: Vision begins to increase from the first days; full clarity occurs within weeks as the tissues adapt.

  • Protective Drops: Drops prescribed by our specialist physicians are used regularly to prevent infection risk and support the integration of the new tissue.

  • Follow-up and Control: Corneal health and vision quality are closely monitored through periodic check-ups during the first year.
